Mount Burdell towers at 1,558 feet over Novato Valley and provides visitors with an opportunity to appreciate Marin County’s breathtaking natural landscapes. Purchased by Marin County Open Space District (MCOSD) and local residents in 1977, its 1,627 acres have undergone considerable restoration and improvement over time.

Flora and Fauna

The preserve boasts an impressive variety of plant and animal life:

  • Trees: Some of Marin’s finest and oldest oak and bay trees
  • Rare Plants: Found in areas with serpentine soils above San Marin Drive

Hidden Lake

About halfway to the summit, visitors will find Hidden Lake, a seasonal pond that serves as a haven for:

Dwarf Oak Trail

Located on the western edge of the preserve, this trail offers:

The Mount Burdell Preserve has a history of environmental challenges and subsequent restoration efforts:

  • At the time of purchase in 1977, the area had suffered from decades of overgrazing
  • Proper land management practices and habitat restoration have significantly improved the landscape
  • Seasonal grazing by small herds of domestic cattle helps reduce non-native grasses that tend to overcrowd native species
  • Visitors are reminded to close all gates to keep cattle in their designated pastures
